Teen Wolf, an action-packed, supernatural drama, is loosely based on the 1985 Michael J. Fox-starring comedy film of the same name. Despite being different in tone from the original movie, the show still features several nods to the original source material.

The most obvious similarities are the names of the main characters – Scott and “Stiles” Stilinski. However, the Scotts have different last names (Howard in the movie, McCall in the show) and the Stiles have different first names (Rupert in the movie, Mieczyslaw in the series). In both the film and the TV show, the duo are an inseparable pair who started out as unpopular outcasts.

The movie took place in Beacon Town, while the show took place in Beacon Hills. Scott’s basketball jersey number was 42, while Stiles’ lacrosse jersey number was the reverse number, 24. In the Season Two episode “Abomination,” the name of the opposing lacrosse team is the Beavers. Scott’s basketball team in the original film is known as the Beavers. The Beavers lacrosse team also had a player with the jersey number 42.

The biggest nod to the original film is the character of Coach Bobby Finstock, the only character in the series to have a first and last name identical to a character in the original film. Both coaches have similar over-the-top personalities, strong bonds with their students, and a penchant for saying “everything else is cream cheese.”
