10 Times BoJack Horseman Assaulted Our Feelings
1. Sarah Lynn's Death
(“That’s too much man” – Season 3, Episode 11)
Ah, sweet, sweet Sarah Lynn.
Sarah-Lynn is a character who we become introduced to in BoJack Horseman’s first season. Originally being played down as the stereotypical child actor gone bad, she spends most of her screen time in this first season being a freeloading, self-centred run of the mill party girl. But by the time season 3 rolls around she’s developed into a character that shows such fragility and depth that even the main character himself may be a little envious.
Upon celebrating reaching 9 months sobriety (an absolute milestone for anyone battling any form of addiction). The title character pushes his own personal agenda onto a young girl he credits himself with destroying time and time again.
Taking her on a bender filled with alcohol, cocaine and anything else that their hands (or hooves) allow them to get hold of. The two travel to a plethora of destinations meanwhile getting into an absurd assimilation of unadulterated shenanigans in the process. These include but are not limited to; Breaking Diane’s wrist, mortifying an AA meeting, ruining Penny Carson’s life for a second time…the list just goes on and on.
This all results in a climax in which BoJack and Sarah-Lynn confide themselves to the planetarium. As the silhouettes of the two characters are shown we as an audience can feel that something is amiss in this scene. As with each letter BoJack enunciates in his monologue, there isn't so much as the sound of a breath between his words from the highly-intoxicated teen sensation adjacent to him. Culminating in a spine-chilling subtext as we hear BoJack repeatedly question “Sarah Lynn”, “Sarah Lynn” and as the third and final “Sarah Lynn” is cohesively spoken as the screen turns to black; we stare blankly at the TV refusing to believe the inevitable.
