10 Times Doctor Who Definitely Wasn’t A Family Show

After losing Clara Oswald, the object of his affection, under sudden and brutal circumstances during the events of Face the Raven, the Doctor loses his way again, telling Ashildr, who is partially responsible for Clara’s death, that he will rain down hell on her and the innocent bystanders of Trap Street, flexing his impressive rogues gallery by threatening to bring the Daleks, Cybermen and Zygons to sort her out unless she fixes this.

Unable to prevent Clara’s death, Twelve is captured by the Time Lords and imprisoned within his confession dial, where he dies a painful death over and over for four and a half billion years, all the while mourning the loss of Clara as he slowly breaks through a wall ten times harder than diamond. The portrayal of grief in Heaven Sent is the most mature we’ve seen to date on the show, and not shying away from it and giving it time to breathe makes this episode a masterpiece.
