10 Times Doctor Who Lied To Your Face

6. Series 14 Being Season 1

In all the promotion for Ncuti Gatwa's first season of Doctor Who, Russell T Davies has stated that it's the perfect jumping-on point for new viewers. This is quite crucial for the Disney+ deal, as the streamer will be hoping for as many eyes as possible on those space babies.

Which is exactly why they're branding Doctor Who Series 14 as Season 1. All of which would be absolutely fair enough, if, like with Christopher Eccleston in 2005, this was a hard reset with no returning elements beyond the TARDIS and the Daleks.

But by stark contrast, Gatwa's Doctor Who Season 1 is tied up in the entire 60-year history of the show. One of his first lines was "Mavic Chen" for goodness sake! Not only that, but we've got UNIT, Bonnie Langford as Mel, a secret from the Third Doctor era, and a teeny-tiny holographic David Tennant.

In other words, Season 1 is just a tag that's designed to coax general viewers into giving the show a try. And then, once they're in, they're hit with six decades of mythology to go back and explore.

It's a big fat lie, but it could ultimately pay dividends for the future of Doctor Who.
