10 Times Futurama Eerily Predicted The Future

8. Virtual Reality

With 1000 years between the real world and Futurama's setting, the writers had to guess what technological advances might be seen in the distant future. One such industry that the show has taken a look at is that of video games, and how they would change over time.

When the series debuted in 1999, the most prominent console in the world was the PlayStation, with the PS2 still a year away. To say that gaming options back then were limited would be a huge understatement, but Futurama still managed to predict that the future would hold virtual reality gaming.

The second ever episode, 'The Series Has Landed', shows the crew head to Luna Park on the Moon, where they visit an arcade of sorts. We can see someone playing skeeball, next to someone playing virtual skeeball, next to Amy Wong playing virtual virtual skeeball.

Not only can we freely purchase such virtual reality consoles now, the similarity of Futurama's VR headsets to those released by PlayStation 17 years later in 2016 is uncanny.

This standard nerd combines the looks of Shaggy with the brains of Scooby, has an unhealthy obsession with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is a firm believer that Alter Bridge are the greatest band in the world.
