10 Times Futurama Eerily Predicted The Future

3. Cancellation

Since first airing all the way back in 1999, Futurama has earned its spot among the elite animated shows, alongside the likes of The Simpsons and Family Guy. However, things haven't always been plain sailing for Matt Groening's second show, as Futurama suffered from much uncertainty over its 14 year run.

The show was cancelled after the Season 4 finale, The Devil's Hands Are Idle Play Things, and though it was ultimately picked back up by Comedy Central, the four straight to DVD films ended with no guarantee of further episodes. The same thing happened at the end of Season 6, with the show ultimately being cancelled for the final time in 2013 after Season 7.

Just over a year before the Futurama's initial cancellation, Bender offered some grim foreshadowing as to how the show would be cut short before its time.

During 'Where No Fan Has Gone Before', Bender described Star Trek as another classic sci-fi show cut short before its time. While this was in reference to Fry's favourite show of the 20th century at the time of its release, just one year later the same thing could be said about Futurama.
