10 Times Futurama Eerily Predicted The Future
4. The Internet Is Listening To You
Have you ever had a conversation about something, then found yourself targeted on your phone by advertising around the same thing? With microphones built into every smartphone, conversations can be picked up and translated into ads and suggested pages on social media and internet browsers. Ironically, the internet is full of examples of this.
Futurama made jokes about ads being transmitted into people's dreams in Season 1, and while we're not quite there yet, Season 3 predicted that the future of technology would see personalised ads sent straight to the user thanks to an overheard conversation.
During The Luck of the Fryrish, the Planet Express crew find themselves discussing the man they thought to be Fry's brother, who had stolen his name. Naturally, the name Philip J. Fry was said several times, and this was picked up by the Professor's internet.
He was automatically shown a video about Fry's namesake, with his calendar being opened to Friday and having some french fries ordered for him. Way back in 2001, this was a creepily accurate prediction of how technology would work.
