10 Times Futurama Made NO Sense

4. Why Was Zoidberg In The Army?

When Fry and Bender didn't want to pay full price for gum, they joined the Earth army. As soon as they signed on the dotted line, enlisting and qualifying for their 5% military discount, war was declared and they were drafted into Zapp Brannigan's seemingly pointless battle against a random alien race.

During the conflict, while Fry was wallowing in a hole filled with his own cowardice, Bender became a hero, diving on a grenade to protect those around him. He was rushed to the medical tent where none other than Doctor Zoidberg was working.

Yet, there had been no mention before of Dr. Z ever joining the army, no explanation as to why he was there, and no mention of his time with Earth's army ever again. Many seasons later, flashbacks in 'The Tip of the Zoidberg' showed that the Planet Express doctor was in the military back in 2927, but this wasn't Earth's army, this was working for Momcorp Old Fashioned Jams, Jellies, and Military Systems.

At what point then did Zoidberg sign up under Zapp Brannigan, and why? Surely he didn't sign up for the 5% military discount? Even then he wouldn't be able to afford any gum. And why wasn't he there when the Professor, Amy, Hermes, and Leela went to see Bender and Fry off, being fired beforehand so he didn't have to worry about his job while he was away like his colleagues?
