10 Times Futurama Made NO Sense
2. Why Was Yancy's Son Still Called Phil?
One of the greatest things about Futurama is its ability to put forward real, genuinely emotional moments, one of the most popular of which came in season three. 'The Luck of the Fryrish' is one of the best episodes the show has ever produced, and the revelation that Yancy hadn't stolen Fry's name, but instead named his son after his brother, was nothing short of heart breaking.
Fry had spent the entire episode hating his older brother for stealing his name, but as Philip J. Fry's gravestone said in the World Heroes section of Orbiting Meadows, he was named for his uncle, to carry on his spirit.
It was a touching tribute from Yancy to his long lost brother, but in Bender's Big Score, when Fry went back in time and lived his life for 12 more years, his nephew was still called Phil. This doesn't make any sense.
Yancy named his son Philip to honour his brother, but with Fry still alive and well when the boy was born as though nothing had ever happened, the older Fry brother wouldn't be in the same position when naming his son. There would be no reason or need to carry on Fry's spirit. It would seem more likely that Yancy would pick a different name, possibly even Yancy, since that was the traditional name that had been passed down the generations of the Fry family.
