8. The Horrifying Flashback

When we first meet the character of Nick Sax, he’s not what you’d call a heroic character. He’s a violent sociopath with little to no care for human life, but how did he get this low in his life?

Well, turns out he was, to a certain degree, an honest detective who was a natural at his job. Nick and his then partner, Merry, are called to a domestic disturbance, a rich and unhinged lawyer who enjoys abusing his wife and infant child. Sax tries to intimidate him so that he’ll stop but, unfortunately, that makes the situation much worse.

The next time the duo are called out to the residence, they find the lawyer is just drenched in blood, the wife is beaten to death and, worst of all, the baby is found in the microwave. After beating the lawyer to death on the front steps of his building, we see that this moment has broken Sax, lashing out at his wife and just losing his faith in humanity.

With a show that likes to constantly mix goofy and cynical, it’s interesting to witness what kind of toll seeing the worst of humanity can have on one man.
