From early on in season 1, Walt was built up to play a huge part in the mystery of show. His strange abilities to make things appear with his consciousness, throw knives with insane accuracy, and have predictive dreams seemed to indicate he was 'special' amongst the other survivors, and a character that was directly linked to the mystical powers of the island itself. All this build up, and so many questions raised by these peculiar events, only for Walt to be taken off the island after being released from his kidnappers (who also seemed aware of Walt's powers), and for him to barely be mentioned ever again. His only other part in the whole show was years later, when he said he had no further contact with his father after finding out that he'd murdered Ana-Lucia and Libby whilst trying to rescue him. Seems a bit like the writers kind of forgot to go back to it once he'd left the island.
