They tried to confuse the audience with all the physics malarky, but to the suspicious viewer, it seems a bit like the creators of Lost struggled to explain some of the ideas within the show. As a last resort, you can imagine them saying something like "Oh God, how are we going to explain that...oh wait, we'll just send them back in time so that they did it all." There was enough going on in the show as it was. The present was filled with so many different plotlines and unresolved mysteries that adding different timezones was enough to make anyone's head explode and lose track of what was going on. That's not even mentioning the numerous plot holes that this concept developed. For instance, how come the present Danielle Rouseau didn't recognise Jin after meeting years ago and spending so much time with him? It's not like she met enough people in the following years for her to forget about him. Admittedly, it was a smart way to tell the stories of what happened during the years of the Dharma Initiative, but was it really worth running the risk of losing an audience's faith in the show after throwing yet another curveball in their direction? People can only handle so much confusion and frustration before losing interest.
