10 Times The Simpsons Got Political
6. Bart To The Future
Bart To The Future, as a Simspons episode, is kind of a mixed bag. It has been called one of the worst in the show's history, but that's actually a stretch, and came before the late teens slump the show went through. As a future-themed episode, it's not the greatest either, but not the worst. Now, as a political episode, it's actually much more entertaining, thanks to it aging far, far better than expected in that area - helped along by the fact that it predicted Donald Trump's presidential bid, though on the show he made it into office.
The episode is mostly set in a future where Lisa Simpson has been elected President of the United States, with Milhouse as her V.P. Bart is her down-on-his-luck brother, playing in a band with best pal Ralph. Yes, Wiggum. With the country facing a financial crisis, Bart's skills at dodging bill collectors (which sometimes involves telling them how they used to be cool) turn out to be critical to Lisa's success, much to her chagrin.
What works? The little things. While the vision of the future is hokey, and Smell You Later replacing Goodbye downright dumb, the Trump mention, America being in dept to just about everyone, and Bart being treated like Jimmy Carter's brother Billy hit the nail on the head.
