10 Times The Simpsons PREDICTED Future Technology

5. Video Chatting

Referring back to Lisa's Wedding for the second (but not final) time, The Simpsons predicted yet more technology which would become widely affordable in the future - the ability to video chat. In this scene, Lisa breaks the news to Marge that she is marrying the charming Hugh Parkfield over a video call, as she pleads with her mother to do everything to stop Homer from potentially ruining the wedding. Although the screen is thick and sits on top of a rotary dial, the idea of being able to talk face to face with family members from across the world was spot on in this eerily accurate foretelling of the future.

Interestingly, this episode was written by Greg Daniels who is famous for The Office, Parks and Recreations and, most recently, Utopia, a series about the future where people don't die but instead get their conscience uploaded into a heaven of their choosing. If his futuristic predictions from his new show are anywhere near as accurate as those from this Simpsons episode, then we are in for an afterlife to die for.

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
