10 Times The Simpsons PREDICTED Future Technology

6. NSA Spying

In 2013, Edward Snowden famously blew the whistle on both the NSA (National Security Agency) and CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) to reveal that people were being spied on through hidden microphones in public and in their devices at home. Which, I've been told in a recent totally non-threatening email and house visit is something I am totally fine with...

This shocking breach of national privacy came as a massive shock to people all around the world. Well, everyone except for The Simpsons writers who predicted this and joked about it not once but twice.

In 2007, The Simpsons Movie was released and whilst Bart, Maggie, Lisa and Marge are on the run from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), their conversation on a train is picked up by an NSA spy. The scene shows an NSA employee screaming out from his desk amongst hundreds of other spies, that after years they had finally caught something incriminating.

Furthermore, ten years earlier, The Simpsons first predicted the use of NSA wiretapping in a very brief shot from season 8 episode 9. In this episode the camera pans up through the floorboards of The Simpson's house clearly showing a wire labelled NSA amongst others from the FBI and the CIA.

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
