10 Times The Simpsons Ruined Homer's Life

6. Mona Simpson Leaving

There’s no doubt that Homer and Abe share a tumultuous, difficult relationship, but they do see each other semi-regularly. The story of Homer’s mother is a tragic one.

Mona Simpson, as far as Homer knew, died when he was very young. This was the story Abe told him to conceal the truth: she was actually on the run from the law, having been part of a protest group that attacked Mr. Burns’ germ laboratory back in 1969. The truth comes to light in the episode “Mother Simpson.” Homer is rocked to the core by the news but thrilled to be able to see his mother again.

This joy is short-lived, however, as Mona is soon spotted and recognised by Burns. With no other option but to flee again with friends, they share an emotional farewell, one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the history of the series. She would return briefly in several episodes, with Homer learning of her death in Season 19’s “Mona Leaves-a.”
