10 Times The Walking Dead Traumatised Fans

4. Carl's Death

The Walking Dead
AMC

Season 8 Episode 9: "Honor."

Carl's death is the biggest injustice in the entire show. Carl Grimes, like in the comics, was destined to continue his father's legacy in the years to follow and help establish a new world. He was never meant to die in a cheap fashion for shock factor.

When Carl stumbles across a lonely and helpless Siddiq in the woods he makes the brave decision to help him. As they fight off walkers, Carl is bitten in the abdomen.

Later, as the group hides in the sewers, Carl reveals his wound to Rick and the others. In an emotionally distraught performance, Rick and Carl bid farewell to each other before Carl shoots himself in the head to prevent his reanimation.

Why is this traumatising? Because it's a betrayal of the The Walking Dead's roots and a stab in the back to loyal fans. Carl's death is emotional and heartbreaking and the show never truly regained its footing following this unpopular decision.

This moment is not only traumatising because it's the death of our protagonist's son, but it can also be blamed as a reason for Andrew Lincoln's exit and the original Walking Dead as we know it. The show had moved beyond the Grimes family and this became evidently clear with the decision to kill Carl.
