10 Times The Walking Dead Went Too Far

5. The Whisperer Border

The Walking Dead
AMC

After the war with Negan was over, many viewers were curious as to where the show could head next. For those who were able to avoid comic spoilers, they were greeted with The Whisperers. For those fans who were worried that the show would never be able to shock them again as it did with Negan, The Whisperers and their idea of a border was sure to put those worries at rest.

As the survivors think they have found peace with the cult of undead skin wearers, they come across the border that Alpha had told Daryl about. It's made up of ten separate heads on pikes, made up of characters from all the different communities. While the scene is fantastically directed and edited, it does feel like the writers wanted to fill a death quota for the show without committing to enough main character deaths.

Of the ten undead heads, only three of the characters are what you would consider 'main' characters. The remaining seven are side characters that many fans probably couldn't even name. Alek, one of the unfortunate pike members, literally first appeared in this episode where he then dies. Character deaths should be used to further the plot, not to fill a quota for ratings. This scene utilises shock to evoke an emotional response from the audience without having the guts to kill off some major players.
