7. Enthusiastic Eating - Food Wars! Shokugeki No Soma
In 2015, the popular manga Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma was turned into an anime - and a pretty good one at that.
Set in a high-level cookery school and following the fortunes of young chef Soma Yukihira, Food Wars! Ran for five seasons and was popular amongst Eastern and Western viewers alike, but there was one issue that fans on either side of the planet struggled to get past.
One of the hallmarks of the show’s early episodes was how excited the judges would get when sampling food in the school’s cooking competitions. The delicious animated grub would send them into exaggerated fits of joy, which was pretty fun at first, but quickly lost its charm.
These over-the-top reactions to eating became more regular and gross as the show went on, leading to plenty of complaints from viewers that these sequences were dominating episodes.
Fan service is commonplace in anime - it's where the term originated - and Food Wars! is one of the worst for it. What used to be a funny once-an-episode gag quickly became the worst part of the show, which disappointed a lot of viewers.
