For those not in the know, the Scandinavian black metal scene can seem seriously imposing. Vocalists sing in guttural growls, bands don terrifying occult garb, and subject matter often fixates on violence, Satan, and general gloomy vibes. For those in the know, it’s even worse.

After the relatively peaceful first wave of Norweigan black metal, the second wave came along with an intention to leave its mark. Bands like Mayhem and Burzum were part of a scene that plotted and often carried out the burnings of churches, the charred remains of which would then be proudly featured on their album covers.

The scene boasts murder, suicide, and arson galore. Mayhem guitarist Euronymous was stabbed to death by bandmate Varg Vikernes; drummer Faust murdered a gay man for reasons he attributed not to homophobia, but just general evil.

There are a few books and movies available on the topic, but many are difficult to find outside of Norway. 2018's Lords of Chaos depicts the life and times of Mayhem (with Kieran Culkin as Euronymous), but several members of the group raged at their depiction, and many critics found the film's approach dismissive of the scene. There's an incredible story in there for anyone willing to take it seriously.
