6. Was Maggie From The Future Or Not? - Sound of My Voice

Sound Of My Voice Brit Marling One of the best thrillers in recent years, Zal Batmanglij's Sound of My Voice follows two filmmakers, Peter and Lorna, who attempt to infiltrate a cult run by a charming, seemingly unflappable leader named Maggie (Brit Marling), who claims to be from the future. For most of the film, we're firmly doubting that Maggie is who she says she is, but things take a turn when Maggie asks teacher Peter to bring one of his students to meet her, insisting that the girl is her mother. Peter and Lorna express concern but look on in amazement as Maggie and the girl perform a secret handshake, with the girl confused as to how Maggie could possibly know the handshake. Maggie says, "You taught it to me", before being arrested in a sting operation orchestrated by Lorna, causing a distraught Peter to wonder whether Maggie had been telling the truth the whole time, or if it was some sort of elaborate hoax. Brilliant, and brilliantly infuriating.
