10 TV Cancellations We're Still Not Over
7. Firefly
Another Joss Whedon creation, Firefly is the ultimate when it comes to thinking about shows which were cancelled too soon. Running for only one season, the show incorporated genres like sci-fi, western, fantasy, war and dystopia into a rush of fast-paced, exciting and endlessly inventive adventures.
Running for only 14 episodes, the show amassed a wide and passionate following, and after its cancellation a number of petitions and letter writing campaigns were put into place. Whedon has stated that he was broken up by the cancellation, and that he had planned for the show to continue for another seven years.
He didn't fully despair, as he began working on a film script in hopes of finishing the show. Attempts to have other networks acquire the series all fell through, so Whedon put forward his script, which led to the film Serenity being released three years after Firefly's cancellation.
Like Deadwood, the film was a solid and entertaining effort, but knowing that Whedon had such big plans for what was still to come makes the cancellation hurt even today, 18 years after the news first broke.
