The great edge that TV has over movies is the ability to foster greater audience immersion over the course of multi-season stories and character arcs, ensuring that when a character eventually bites the big one, you really feel it.

When you've spent literally dozens of hours getting to know characters, it hurts when they finally kick the bucket, and like any year in TV, 2020 served up its fair share of unforgettable, iconic, and straight-up distressing death scenes.

Picking just 10 isn't easy, but these are the characters whose deaths got fans talking - and in some cases, sobbing uncontrollably.

Whether sly villains fans couldn't wait to see killed off, beloved heroes who they hoped they'd never have to mourn, or more ambiguous figures working on the fringes, these characters all took dirt naps in ways none of us will ever forget.

From those lucky enough to graduate to the afterlife to those who had nothing but the black void of nothingness to look forward to, these are the most unforgettable TV character deaths of the last 12 months...

10. The Handler - The Umbrella Academy

Though it very much seemed like The Handler (Kate Walsh) was done away with at the end of The Umbrella Academy's first season after Hazel (Cameron Britton) shot her in the head, she returned for season two courtesy of a bullet-deflecting metal plate in her noggin.

But her plan to get back on top was ultimately foiled in the second season finale, where The Handler found herself pumped with lead by Swedish assassin Axel (Kris Holden-Ried), who courtesy of timey-wimey shenanigans actually got to shoot her dead twice.

Couldn't have happened to a more charming Machiavellian schemer, really.

While it's possible she could return for season three, this felt pretty definite, and Kate Walsh herself believes that her tenure with the show is now over.
