Method Of Death

Suffocated.

Why It Was Undeserved

Poussey (Samira Wiley) was easily one of Litchfield Penitentiary's most likeable inmates, a smart, principled and big-hearted woman who ended up in jail for possessing a relatively small amount of weed.

Poussey didn't even deserve to be in jail, let alone die an utterly horrifying death at the end of season four, when during a scuffle with inmates, C.O. Bayley (Alan Aisenberg) kneels on her back, causing her to suffocate amid the chaos.

It was certainly a fitting death dramatically speaking, echoing the many similar deaths that white police officers have inflicted upon unarmed black people in real life, and given how good of a person she proved herself to be, her demise turned out all the more upsetting.

Poussey's death may have been sudden and shocking, but it very much informed the entire fifth season, which is defined by a prison riot as the inmates demand justice for her demise.
