10 TV Characters You Never Expected To Be Killed Off

9. Laverne Roberts - Scrubs

Simpsons Larry Death
NBC

As is natural with a TV show based in and around a hospital, patients came and went throughout Scrubs' nine seasons. Arguably the most painful patient death fans of the show had to endure was that of Brendan Fraser's Ben Sullivan, however he did have a serious life-threatening illness and there was always a risk that was how his story was going to end.

The same can't be said about Nurse Laverne Roberts. Having been around Sacred Heart Hospital since the beginning, even playing a key role in the very first episode, Laverne's death in season six came as a huge shock.

This was kind of the point. All episode Nurse Roberts had been arguing with Dr. Cox about whether or not things happen for a reason, and just as he was able to give himself the slightest glimmer of hope that that might be true, someone he was close to was in a car accident for seemingly no reason at all.

As hard as this was for Dr. Cox, the following episode showed Carla unable to let go of her friend while she was on life support, refusing to say goodbye for fears it would make the whole thing real. Eventually she came to her senses and in one of the most emotionally charged episodes of Scrubs ever, she said farewell before Laverne peacefully passed.

Scrubs was always excellent at balancing goofy humour and gut-wrenching heartbreak, and this was one of the best of the latter.
