By season six of How I Met Your Mother, there can be no doubt that the shine had started to fade on what was once an excellent TV show. Ted, the main protagonist, was the worst character, and while audiences hadn't yet given up on caring about who the mother of his kids actually was, they were getting close.

However, this season does boast one incredibly clever episode titled Bad News. From the beginning to the very end, numbers from 50 down to one can be seen on random objects in the background, counting down to the titular bad news.

It was easy to assume through the episode that it would relate in some way to Marshall and Lily's struggles to conceive a child, since this took up a big chunk of the story, but this was a cruel misdirection.

Throughout the episode, Marshall was struggling to come to terms with the fact that he may not be able to give his parents grandchildren, and just when he was able to pick up the phone to tell his dad the good news, he was told that his father had died. Absolutely nobody could have seen this coming, and it was tough to take.
