8. 100 - Criminal Minds
Albeit a very good one, Criminal Minds is just another in a long line of weekly police procedural shows.
Someone does a crime, the team solve various clues to catch the baddie, everything gets nicely resolved just in time for tea and cakes.
But there were no tea and cakes in sight for this Season 5 episode.
Whilst on the tail of a spree killer nicknamed The Boston Reaper, the team at the Behavioural Analysis Unit learn that he has taken a hostage. Not just any hostage though; he's taken Haley, ex-wife of BAU member Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner.
As Hotch begs for the killer to spare the mother of his son, the rest of his team listen in nervously. Then, three gunshots are fired.
The death of Haley marked a major shift in the show's status quo, as she had been a fairly regular character up to this point. Criminal Minds rarely did something like this, so when it did happen, it was all the more effective.
Also, the sight of Hotch beating Haley's killer to death with his bare hands was conflicting to say the least.
