10 TV Friendships That Wouldn't Work In Real Life
4. Elena Gilbert And Caroline Forbes (The Vampire Diaries)
While the supernatural teen drama is not the one on this list that prioritizes friendship above all else (platonic relationships getting kind of lost within countless romances and various threats at all times), it's still an important part of the show as it helps the characters to retain their humanity as well as sanity. Elena Gilbert, the protagonist of the series, maintains strong bonds with Bonnie Bennett and Caroline Forbes throughout the entire run of the show (even after her character is written off at the end of Season 6 due to Nina Dobrev's departure).
That said, her friendship with Caroline is questionable. The girls are said to be childhood friends but from the very first episode Caroline makes it clear that she possesses a lot of resentment towards Elena for being 'the first choice for everyone' and sees her as competition. She even goes as far as making comments about how Elena's become a drag since her parents' death (insensitive much?).
When Caroline becomes a vampire and is included in the supernatural world of Mystic Falls, she and Elena grow a lot closer, old issues seemingly solved for good. That is, until Elena becomes a vampire and instead of supporting her friend, Caroline becomes judgemental of her transition choices as well as pushing her towards Stefan instead of Damon. Considering their past, Caroline has every right to hate Damon, but if one remembers how she developed feelings for Klaus, the big bad vampire who killed Elena's aunt and pretty much caused most of the mess in the series, her judging Elena is a smidge hypocritical.
With all Caroline's faults, Elena is also not a saint. Up until Caroline becomes a vampire, she looks down on her as a kind of shallow and self-centered person, even going as far as saying she 'has some really annoying traits'. All in all, while these two might've never had a big blow out fight, all the passive aggressive judgement and resentment do not make good grounds for a solid friendship.
