10 TV Mistakes You Can’t Unsee
2. Mulder’s Marriage - The X-Files
The slowly smouldering will-they won’t-they chemistry between Gillian Anderson’s straight-laced sceptic Scully and David Duchovny’s more open-minded Mulder kept the mystery of The X-Files alive throughout the series’ now-ten season run (yes, we’re including the revival, feel free to fight in the comments). When the show’s alien-based conspiracy arc fell flat or hit a dead end, at least Mulder and Scully’s on-and-off romantic entanglement was there to keep viewers hooked.
That is, until a season five episode saw Duchovny’s heroic protagonist wearing an inexplicable wedding ring, owing to the fact that the actor had recently gotten married in real life. Eagle-eyed fans immediately noticed and the creators essentially shrugged off the implications of this development, saying—maybe Mulder was married before? Maybe that’s also part of his tragic backstory? Maybe who knows?
Who could have seen a disappointing ending coming from this crew of scribes? It truly beggars belief that the eventual series finale was a widely derided dud.
