5. Does Stanley Have A Moustache? - The Office
Office fans can argue all day over which episode has the best cold open, but when it comes to the most head-scratching prologue, that prize has to go to Welcome Home.
The episode begins with Stanley returning to work after spending time in hospital. To perk him up, Pam tells Jim that she's prepared a Get Well Card that includes a joke about Stanley's moustache. The only problem with Pam's card, is Stanley doesn't have a moustache... or does he?
Even though Stanley's colleagues have worked alongside him for up to 20 years, none of them can say for certain whether the disgruntled salesman has facial hair. Not only is this a great gag, it forces the audience to second-guess themselves.
For the record, Stanley has featured in every single episode of The Office. In fact, he's featured more times than the lead, Michael Scott. Since Welcome Home is the 172nd episode, everyone should be familiar with Stanley's appearance by this point. And yet, this simple wisecrack befuddled us all. Even upon repeated viewings, this moment still managed to gaslight viewers.
Also, we're not going to say whether Stanley has a moustache or not, just to prove this point.
