Let's stay in the world of animation. Avatar: The Last Airbender was a kids show that ran from 2005 to 2008.

Despite being intended for children, its fascinating world and complex lore has given it a huge cult following which includes fans of all ages. Even though it only ran for three seasons, Avatar told a tale on par with fantasy epics such as Lord of the Rings, despite being a wholly original TV show.

Luckily for fans, after the conclusion of the show series creator, Michael Dante DiMartino felt he had more stories to tell. Three years after the finale, he sat down with comic writer Gene Yang and gave his blessing for Yang to write a three-part graphic novel called The Promise. Since then novels have released annually.

These comics aren't released as issues, but rather as full self-contained stories. This makes them highly accessible for people who loved the show but don't read comics.

Unfortunately, Yang left the series in 2017, but not before releasing North and South, a beautiful story inspired by his own experiences with culture and heritage and a must-read for any fans of Avatar.
