4. When They See Us

Moving into more serious territory, we now have a moving adaptation of real events. When They See Us was created by Ava DuVernay and recounts the New York Central Park jogger case that unfolded in April 1989.

When a woman was raped and beaten in the area, five black youths were arrested and later prosecuted for the act, despite being completely innocent of the charges. The horrific ordeal they endured is taken to the small screen in raw, uncomfortable detail as they're treated disgracefully by both the police and the American justice system.

The group of boys we follow; Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise and Raymond Santana are the central focus of a deeply tragic sense of injustice.

They're pressed into giving confessions one moment and thrown into prison the next. Their suffering both physically and mentally is harsh and cruel, with the series ensuring that no detail of their is left unchecked.

The performances across the ensemble cast are powerful and moving, the blend between actor recreation and real life footage seamless. As a deeply relevant and emotional retelling, the Central Park Jogger Case saw five black men wrongfully accused of murder.

Justice in America is often twisted, and no series has hammered that point home more than When They See U.
