10 TV Shows That Killed Off Their Biggest Stars

8. Jennifer Carpenter - Dexter

Brody Homeland

There was once a time when Dexter ruled the world. A brilliant show with a truly ingenious premise, the first four seasons were some of the best in modern TV history. Unfortunately, it quickly began to fall apart with its last few seasons, and much of that was down to the way it treated Debra Morgan.

An energetic, tough as nails detective, her final arc sees her realise her romantic feelings for her own brother before becoming an alcoholic PI when she realises Dexter (Michael C Hall) is a serial killer.

Later, she is shot and rushed to hospital, and it looks as though she's going to make it before she suffers a stroke that leaves her braindead, causing Dexter to remove her life support and run off to become a lumberjack. Because reasons.

Debra was arguably the show's best character, a strong, hard-working, upstanding cop brought to life by the endless charisma of Jennifer Carpenter, a fan favourite for all eight seasons of the series.

Hers was a cruel, unnecessary death, and Carpenter really deserved more time with the character.

But then again, maybe she'll somehow return for the upcoming Dexter miniseries...
