10 TV Shows That Made Fun Of Their Fans

4. Monk Makes Fun Of Fans Who Hate The New Theme Song

It's pretty common for fans to get riled up about shows changing things, and an episode of Monk decided to poke fun at that.

In the episode Mr. Monk and the TV Star, Sarah Silverman guest stars as Marci Maven, an obsessed TV fanatic who latches on to star Brad Terry. Later on she becomes obsessed with Monk himself, writing songs for him and making a fansite. So she essentially becomes an exaggerated stand in for obsessive Monk fans.

Making further reference to Monk fans specifically, there's a moment when Marci is upset that the show she watches altered its theme song, a reference to Monk fans who were annoyed the show changed its theme between seasons. Later, when Monk tells her that he doesn't carry a gun, Marci says he does in her fan fiction.

And at one point in a funny little meta moment, Marci actually refers to names of Monk episodes, briefly slipping out of the reality of the show as if Marci is a fan of Monk itself. It's another case of an exaggerated fan character who is meant both to mock the fan base and celebrate their devotion to the show.
