10 TV Shows That Re-Used Props From Other Shows
5. Reactor Mach II
A shiny new sports car was the must-have status symbol for any American baby boomer in TV's first golden age. So, a space age, gadget-filled supercar was the same in shows of a more fantastical bent. One space age supercar in particular, in fact.
Costing $20,000 way back in the 1960s, and coming with such futuristic gadgets as an electrically-powered retractable roof, hydraulic suspension and a "radar screen" that was really just some LEDs behind a bit of glass, the Reactor Mach II was a concept car built by automotive customizer Gene Winfield.
Winfield took his design to Hollywood where, in 1967, the writers of Bewitched penned a whole episode around it. In Super Car, Samantha's mother tries to win over Darrin by zapping up the car of the future with predictably chaotic consequences.
The Reactor was obviously popular enough on this appearance to be brought out again whenever TV execs needed a motor with a futuristic look. It would later crop up in the Star Trek episode Bread And Circuses (the one where the Enterprise crew have to fight in Roman-style gladiatorial combat). With the addition of ears, whiskers and a fluffy tail it also served as the "Kittymobile" for Eartha Kitt's Catwoman on Batman.
Today the Reactor can be seen at a motor museum in Afton, Oklahoma. Winfield, meanwhile, used it as his ticket to break into film work. He would go on to design the "Spinners" in Blade Runner.
