Despite Westworld’s stellar casting, impressive visuals and inexplicably complex and intricate storytelling, it must be remembered that dystopian sci-fi/Western mashups have a long and troubled history. From Deadly Reactor to Solo: A Star Wars Story, sci-fi and Westerns have often mixed like oil and water.

Based on the 1973 film of the same name, Westworld has however garnered universal acclaim, largely overcoming the difficulty of pairing the Wild West with advanced robotics. For many the two genres were deemed incompatible but Westworld’s stellar cast and ingenious writing has led to the show’s massive success.

Whilst the show has been criticized for its overly complex storylines and sometimes insane complexity, it’s fair to say that Westworld is in another universe to Cowboys vs Aliens…or Wild Wild West.
