10 TV Shows That Suffered A Sophomore Slump

9. Jessica Jones

13 Reasons Why Season 2
Netflix

Just like with her fellow Defenders, Daredevil and Luke Cage, Jessica Jones suffered a bit of a sophomore slump. The critical reviews for the second seasons of all three shows were worse than the first, and Jessica was perhaps the most disappointing of the three.

The second season of Jessica Jones wasn't bad, but it certainly didn't live up to the hype and promise laid down by its predecessor. The first season had a unique style, fast-paced plot, and perhaps the most compelling villain of all the Marvel Netflix series in the form of Kilgrave (David Tennant).

Season two had none of those things. Instead, like so many disappointing second seasons, it struggled from major pacing issues and a meandering plot that really takes time to get going. The first few episodes, in particular, are a real slog to get through.

Often, superheroes are only as interesting as their villains, and the lack of a strong evil presence definitely had a negative impact on the show. The stylistic noir flourishes of the first season were also lacking and it often felt like the writers were just trying to kill time. Still, at least it wasn't as bad as Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones will be back for a third season.
