10 TV Shows That Suffered A Sophomore Slump

The first season of 13 Reasons Why was highly controversial but also highly rated. It received mostly great reviews and, despite some dark and disturbing scenes, was commended for addressing real-life issues that many teens tragically do face, as well as offering a more mature and realistic depiction of adolescence than many other young adult shows.

Despite a few key differences, the first season follows the story of the original Jay Asher novel and finishes with a grim but fitting conclusion. All 13 of the tapes are heard and most people involved learn some important lessons. It all could have ended there, but it didn't.

The second year tagline, "The tapes were just the beginning", was the first worrying sign that season two was set to be a desperate extension of a story that didn't necessarily need extending, and that's exactly what happened.

The acting of Katherine Langford and Dylan Minnette remains one of the show's strong suits, but the constant appearances of Ghost Hannah ruin a lot of the good work that had been done in season one to create such a tragic, impossible love story between the pair, and some of the episodes are slower than a snail on crutches. Season three is on the way but will need to be very good to justify any further continuation.
