10 TV Shows That Suffered A Sophomore Slump

13 Reasons Why Season 2
ABC

It would be an understatement to call Lost groundbreaking. Nowadays, we've got more great shows than we can count, but back in the early 2000s, big budgets and ensemble casts were much more prevalent in Hollywood than on TV. Lost was one of the first big shows to change that, and its first season was almost flawless.

The combined writing talents of Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse, and J.J. Abrams helped to craft an incredible world with deep characters, suspenseful stories, a great mixture of action and mythology, and a whole mess of mysteries. Unfortunately, it was those very same mysteries that led to the show's second season being a bit of a letdown.

We did at least discover what the hatch was all about, but, like so many big reveals in Lost, that whole segment answered one question and raised two dozen more. The mythology is expanded throughout season two but viewers were left with far more head-scratching moments than satisfying solutions.

The newly-introduced characters were a real mixed bag too. Desmond and Henry Gale were fascinating, but others like Libby and Ana Lucia had little to offer, and some of the regular stars like Charlie and Claire also suffered with weak development. The show ran for four more seasons and has legions of loyal fans, but ratings started to drop after the disappointments of season two.
