10 TV Shows That Suffered A Sophomore Slump

13 Reasons Why Season 2
ABC

The second season of Twin Peaks has some very special moments, but in terms of tone and pacing, it was a major departure from the first season and many viewers were bamboozled by the trippy 'Red Room' sequences and supernatural developments that became more frequent as the show went on.

Unlike many other second seasons on this list that started poorly and got a bit better towards the end, season two of Twin Peaks actually starts strongly but really begins to wane in its second half. For many fans, the moment at which the show loses its way is when we learn who killed Laura Palmer.

Figuring out the killer's identity was a huge draw for Twin Peaks, but once we knew who'd done the deed, the whole thing started to feel a little aimless, resulting in several plotlines that don't really go anywhere and a lot more of those aforementioned supernatural scenes.

Executive influence and other factors played a part in season two's issues, forcing the creators to reveal the killer sooner than planned and cutting short a compelling romance between Agent Dale Cooper and Audrey Horne due to the fact that Horne's co-star, Laya Flynn Boyle, was starting to get jealous. Fans had to wait over 25 years for the show to come back in the form of Twin Peaks: The Return, which received many rave reviews and award nominations.
