10 TV Shows That Went From Great To Terrible SO FAST

9. 13 Reasons Why

Some ideas simply don’t need a second season.

Or a third, or a fourth, for that matter.

Released in 2017, 13 Reasons Why was a long awaited adaptation of the young adult novel of the same name. Dealing with heavy themes of sexual assault, drug abuse, and teen suicide, the show was met with critical acclaim upon release.

The central pairing of Katherine Waterson and Dylan Minette impressed in difficult roles, but there wasn’t a weak link in the cast. Potentially melodramatic material was handled well and the show’s finale was a moving, ambiguous success.

Then came season two, eager to outdo its predecessor.

This edgy drama tipped over into morbid absurdity with its overstuffed second season, which had the admirable aim of addressing serious issues but all the subtlety and focus of machine gun fire.

Want a moving depiction of realistic teen drug use? Too bad, here’s some insanely explicit male sexual abuse. Want to maybe realistically depict the aftermath of such a traumatic scene? Too bad, here’s a school shooter bringing an arsenal of weapons to prom.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
