Reading Rainbow was an American children's show that lasted a staggering twenty-one seasons, running from June 1983 to November 2006 on American network PBS. During that time there were a total of one-hundred and fifty five episodes, presented by actor LeVar Burton.

Though the show soon became an integral part of children's education through television in America, PBS's financial woes meant that the show was cancelled in 2006.

In 2014, however, Burton launched a public Kickstarter in an attempt to resurrect the show. At the time, there were basically no examples of TV shows being crowdfunded by fans - the most prominent example was the film version of Veronica Mars - so many were sceptical that such a thing was any more than a pipe dream. The attempt had come from seemingly nowhere, but unbeknown to the general public, Burton had immediately began negotiating the rights to the show's name and previous episodes following its cancellation.

The Kickstarter was a phenomenal success, breaking the record for the highest funded project at the time and currently holding the record for the largest number of backers. As of right now, new episodes and features are being made for the Reading Rainbow website and tablet app.
