10 TV Shows You Didn't Realise Were Set In The Same Universe
7. Gravity Falls And Rick & Morty
So far you've seen shows on the same network crossing over, but here's a show on Disney XD and one on Cartoon Network that connect to one another. The result is pretty amazing.
In the pilot episode of Rick and Morty, which aired in December 2013, Rick opens up a bunch of portals to other universes. If you look closely, you can see a pen, a notepad and a mug dropping through one of those portals.
Then, in an episode of Gravity Falls airing October 2014, Stan accidentally drops his pen, notepad and mug through a portal. Those items warp into that episode of Rick and Morty which aired nearly a year earlier.
It's very clearly not a coincidence, because it isn't just any ordinary mug. Stan's mug has a red question mark on it, and that exact same mug design is in the Rick and Morty episode.
This certainly required some deal of planning considering how far apart the two episodes were. Did the two teams coordinate and decide sometime in 2013 that in a future Gravity Falls episode, Stan would somehow lose his things into a portal? Either way, it's a pretty awesome little gag, and even if it's just two animation teams paying tribute to one another, it's fun to imagine this means the shows share some sort of continuity.
