10 TV Side Characters We Loved More Than The Main Character

1. Mrs. Hudson - Sherlock

With Sherlock Holmes and his trusty companion, John Watson, taking up much of the screen time of BBC's Sherlock (go figure), the case is always at the forefront. Mrs Hudson, wonderfully portrayed by Una Stubbs, is never at the centre of one of the show's 13 episodes, but it's always a delight when the unassuming old lady pops onto the screen.

Ever the ray of sunshine, Mrs Hudson's blissful naivety of Sherlock and Watson's antics is more often than not a cause for amusement. Taking the role of mother hen to Sherlock and Watson, her presence highlights the pair's tendency to act like children when in the iconic 221B Baker Street flat.

Despite her friendly aura, the show drops hints at Mrs Hudson being far from the kind old lady that lives next door, contrasting with the character we thought we knew. We learn a little about her tumultuous troubles with Mr Hudson and his running of a drug cartel, which is a shock given her inviting, grandma-like energy.

There's more to Mrs Hudson than meets the eye, which makes her all the more lovable, perhaps more so than the titular detective and his faithful friend.
