10 Most Twisted Characters in American Horror Story
3. Marie Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) 'Coven'
A blast from the past and a woman who literally looks like she has just been dug up, LaLaurie completes the comedy duo of Bates and Lange which is serving as the main dynamic so far on 'Coven'. Her story begins way back in 1830's as the socialite-turned-mutilator meets her match in Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett). LaLaurie is punished for her treatment of black slaves, including sewing feces in their mouths and making a human minotaur. Laveau enters her house under the guise of giving her everlasting beauty, but what she actually gives her is much darker the gift of everlasting life. After witnessing the murder of her three daughters and husband, LaLaurie is locked in a box and proceeds to be buried underground for the next 200 years without even so much a crossword to complete.
Found by clairvoyant witch Nan and dug up by Supreme Fiona Goode, it appears that LaLaurie is struggling to adjust to life in the 21st Century. The scene of her crying at the 'magic box' when she realises there is a black man in office is one of comedy gold and Bates exudes madness in a role that fits her archetype perfectly (Misery, anyone?). I can't wait to see where they take the character next this season as I am starting to worry she is going a bit soft on us.
