9. How Did Pam Become A Volleyball Superstar?

The Season 4 episode Job Fair is a wellspring of inconsistencies, which will be expounded upon later. For right now, let's focus on Pam. In the episode, a small group of representatives from Dunder Mifflin venture off to Pam's old high school to attempt to lure kids into an internship with the company. Once inside her former gymnasium, Pam strolls down memory lane, recalling how she used to pretend to have PMS to get out of playing volleyball. Yet, just one season later, in a crucial plot point in the episode Company Picnic (well, as crucial as a plot point about a company picnic can be), we learn that Pam is a superstar volleyballer. She's so much better than every other person at the Scranton branch, in fact, that when she injures herself in a match against Corporate, the rest of the team has to stall for an excruciatingly long time so Pam can get checked out by a nearby hospital and hopefully return to win the game for them. Pam herself explains her volleyball prowess coyly, saying: "Maybe I played a little in junior high. And in high school. Maybe a little in college. And went to volleyball camp most summers!" If she loves the sport so much--and is so damn stellar at it--why would she NOT want to destroy her classmates in high school gym class?
