Despite its ingrained horror tropes sitting front and centre, this recent effort by Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars) has its heart securely on one type of format; the crime procedure show.

In a post-zombie world that has returned to relative normality, Rose McIver’s reformed undead helps the police solves crimes with her significant powers. That usually involves her eating the brain of a wrongfully murdered victim to find vital clues and solve the case.

Certainly, the premise feels like some desperate pitch for a TV writer to keep his job but the combination is a fresh shake-up to this formulaic sub-genre.

It’s hardly the grim and dark show the synopsis suggests. Certainly, when the nastier aspects come into play, it's quick and vicious, but overall this is a colourful, funny and breezy watch with an extremely likeable set of characters filling out its ensemble roster.

The results are a welcome alternative to the usual po-faced and overly serious shenanigans of these types of shows. With sharp dialogue, an enjoyable supporting cast and a refreshing smash-up of genres, it results in the most entertaining crime procedure show currently running - and one that deserves recognition outside its loyal cult following.
