10 Underrated Current Crime TV Shows You Need To Be Watching

Championed pulp novelist Joe R. Lansdale's, and genre director Jim Mickle made for a great match on the underrated movie Cold In July. The two team up again for a worthy adaption of the author's southern fried crime series.

Skillfully cast as the leads are James Purefoy and Michael K. Williams. The heart of the plot-lines showcases the tight and believable bond between the two - close-knit friends, that grew up like brothers - with them thrown on whatever crazy adventure Lansdale’s source material conjures up.

Enticingly enough, the show reflects the authors’ penchant for switching genres, with the flavours of each season feeling different. The first was a Southern Noir that switched into a bloody exploitation movie, the second a slow-burn murder mystery. Now with season three revving up, it interestingly switches gears into a tense small-town thriller with paranoid undertones.

It boils down to a show every bit as distinct and colourful as its source, as it drips with style, memorable characters and cracking dialogue. Sadly when it comes to mainstream plaudits and nominations this one is highly ignored.

Perhaps the underdog status helps elevate its pulpy cult pedigree - let's just hope there's enough of an audience to justify plenty more seasons coming.
