10 Underrated Current Sci-Fi TV Shows You Need To Be Watching
8. The OA
This Netflix project dropped out of nowhere in late 2016. It's actress/screenwriter Brit Marling's third time collaborating with Zal Batmanaglij (who directs all episodes) in a fascinating myriad of complex ideas and sci-fi thematics made with the same thoughtful, engrossing if slightly highfalutin approach as their film projects.
Armed with a killer premise; blind girl Marling mysteriously vanishes for seven years, then returns with her sight fully intact. A gang of directionless youths end up drawn to her, as she reveals the frightening truth behind her disappearance.
The main mystery will hook you from the start, and although it stumbles near the finish line, the journey there is an intriguing and unique one that's worth your attention. It definitely stands as one of the most original shows running, at least when it comes to spirituality and perspective on present society. You might not always agree with what it has to say, but it presents an interesting argument to listen to.
Also, the results have to be commended as it's beautifully shot and carefully acted, with a career-best from Jason Isaacs.
With plenty of initial buzz surrounding its surprise Netflix release, most people dismissed it after a few episodes when it didn’t contain the same accessibility as the streamer's Stranger Things. It’s a grand shame since while the show is demanding, it’s also incredibly rewarding, and worth catching up on before the mystery-shrouded season 2 drops.
