Terry Gilliam’s loopy thriller was a rare mainstream success for the distinct director, greatly helped by its arresting narrative twists and an involving main character.
A decision to translate it to TV seemed like an enticing one, and although the shows early episodes felt like a budget retread of the movie, it thankfully stepped into a new and gripping territory and has left its source material far in the rearview at this point.
The film’s main driving question - is the main character a hallucinating psychopath, or time jumping hero? - would have worn thin in the long format, so a clever gang of writers switched the emphasis to mind-twisting time mechanics and the severe consequences.
The trio of likeable heroes - Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull, and Kirk Acevedo - are constantly put at odds due to their complex mission to save the world from destruction, with loyal alliance turning to full-on antagonism, and vice-versa.
Its main plot is constantly swerving onto exciting and unpredictable paths, yet not just for drama's sake. Refreshingly the story never milks its major dilemmas or questions nonsensically, the season's objectives are constantly resolved, yet part of the fun is they lead to a myriad of bigger problems.
This one joins the list as yet another overlooked Syfy show, so make sure to catch it as it gears up for its fourth and final season this year, as its clever writing has helped it become one of the strongest time-travelling shows - perhaps, ever.
